Cygnus first engaged Zing in 2021 while its revolutionary wireless fire alarm system was still in development. At that stage, our role was to assess the likely market response through targeted research and strategic development.

The system itself represented a major step forward in wireless fire alarm technology. Built on a cutting-edge mesh platform, it enables large fire alarm systems to be installed across extensive and complex environments with zero wiring beyond the control panel - a capability unmatched by other wireless systems on the market.

Four years later, with the product having been commercially available for more than two years, Cygnus returned to Zing to reassess its market positioning. The company had reached a key point of inflection, with proven technology in the field and the ambition to scale the business significantly.

To support that next stage of growth, we designed a structured programme built around four strategic phases.

Phase 01

Market understanding

Establishing strategic clarity

The first phase centred on developing a deep understanding of the market landscape and Cygnus’s place within it.

We conducted two in-depth strategy workshops with the Cygnus leadership team. Between these sessions, Zing carried out qualitative and quantitative research with the company’s target customer base, gathering insight into market perceptions, decision drivers, and competitive dynamics.

Armed with these insights, the second workshop enabled us to identify and confirm the most effective strategic direction for Cygnus - defining where the company should focus its efforts and how its unique strengths should be expressed.

Phase 02

Market approach

Translating strategy into practical positioning

Once the strategic position was defined, the next step was to explore how it should be communicated.

This phase examined the implications for Cygnus’s overall brand architecture and identity, along with the most effective routes for market engagement. We considered how the refined positioning could be expressed across marketing campaigns and sales interactions.

In effect, this stage stress-tested the strategy - ensuring it could be communicated clearly, convincingly and consistently across every touchpoint.

Phase 03

Communication execution

Aligning marketing materials with strategy

With the strategic direction confirmed, we moved into practical implementation.

Together with the Cygnus team, we identified the key marketing and sales materials that would need to be updated in order to reflect the refined brand strategy. These included:

+ Updated messaging and design for key sections of the website
+ Creation of a new corporate video to succinctly communicate the value proposition
+ Development of a refreshed core sales presentation

By aligning these critical assets with the new strategic positioning, Cygnus was able to present a far clearer and more compelling proposition to the marketplace.
